One disadvantage: foam is less dimensionally stable long-term than fleece or glass fibre. After 3–4 years slight sagging can occur if the panels are only glued. The catch: Basotect comes as a grey panel without fabric covering. For living spaces this is often optically unacceptable. The fleece is available in 8 colours, including subtle tones like beige, taupe and sage green. Fire protection B1, installation via adhesive pads or spacers. The Pyramid panel is the cheapest in this comparison, and it shows. The foam is pyramid-profiled (typical for studio aesthetics), in black or anthracite, and is usually sold in 12-packs for €199. With NRC 0.68 the absorption performance is the lowest here; that's sufficient for small podcast corners or gaming rooms where you primarily want to dampen flutter echoes.

In practice it's clear: the pyramid shape brings no acoustic advantage over flat panels of the same thickness. The effect is purely visual. Also, the material is only classified as B3 fire protection (easily flammable), I advise against installing more than 2 m² of it in a room. The Broadway Panel is known from the studio world and is valued by sound engineers. With NRC 0.88 the absorption is in the upper range; the glass fibre material is non-combustible (A2), available in 6 colours and fabric-covered. The material is more durable than no-name foams, but not as dimensionally stable as fleece or glass fibre.

What you really need to consider when choosing, 7 decision criteria

**1. NRC value, from when is it relevant?**

The NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) indicates what percentage of incident sound energy in the frequency range 250–2,000 Hz is absorbed. A value of 0.80 means 80% absorption. In practice: from NRC 0.75 a panel is effective for living spaces and offices. Anything below (0.65–0.70) is only sufficient for slightly reverberant rooms or supplementary measures. Anything above (0.85–0.95) is only worthwhile if you have very high demands or the room is extremely reverberant (reverberation time over 1.0 second).

An example from practice: in a 28 m² living room with laminate flooring and glass fronts, reverberation time was 1.1 seconds. With 6 panels at NRC 0.80 (total 2.2 m² absorber surface) it dropped to 0.6 seconds. With panels at NRC 0.90 we would have achieved 0.55 seconds, a difference the occupants didn't notice in everyday life.

**2. Room size and quantity, the 10% rule**

As a rule of thumb: you need absorber surface amounting to 10–15% of floor area. For a 20 m² office that's 2–3 m². With panels of 60×60 cm (0.36 m² per piece) you therefore need 6–8 panels. Less than 5% only brings noticeable effects in rooms with already good basic acoustics (carpet, curtains, upholstered furniture). In 7 years of consultation I recommend polyester fleece in 75% of cases, the price-performance ratio is unbeatable. Glass fibre only when genuinely needed (commercial, studio); foam only on very tight budgets.

**4. Fire protection, when is which class required?**

- **B1 (flame-retardant):** Required for all commercial premises, practices, public buildings. Also recommended for living spaces. - **B2 (normally flammable):** Permissible in living spaces, not in commercial. Caution near heat sources. - **B3 (easily flammable):** Only for small areas under 2 m² in living spaces. Avoid this class if possible. - **A1/A2 (non-combustible):** Prescribed in sensitive areas (schools, clinics). More expensive, but safer long-term.

In a 2025 case a customer wanted to install foam panels (B3) in a 40 m² office. The insurance refused coverage after inspection, he had to remove everything and replace with B1 material. Cost: €800 additional.

**5. Installation, gluing, frames or spacers?**

- **Double-sided tape / adhesive pads:** Simplest method, but residue-free only on stable substrates (plasterboard, concrete). Woodchip wallpaper can tear. Not for rented flats with deposit risk. - **Spacers (e.g. Command Strips):** Residue-free, for up to 1 kg per panel. Well suited for panels under 60×60 cm. In rented flats I recommend spacers, in 90% of cases they hold without problems, and no traces remain when moving out.

**6. Design, when is it more important than performance?**

In living spaces, practices and boutiques, design is often equal to function. A panel with NRC 0.70 in the right colour will be accepted and remain on the wall; a panel with NRC 0.90 in unsuitable anthracite will be taken down after 3 months. In such cases I recommend: take the panel you like, as long as the NRC is above 0.70. The difference between 0.75 and 0.85 is marginal in everyday life if you maintain the minimum quantity.

In a consultation project for a cosmetics practice we deliberately chose Vicoustic panels (NRC 0.65) in terracotta because they matched the interior. The client was satisfied, although with higher NRC we would have achieved 0.1 seconds more reduction.

**7. Price per square metre, the real comparison figure**

Never compare only price per panel, but always **price per m²**. Example:

The 3 most common buying mistakes, and how to avoid them

**Mistake 1: Buying too few panels**

Many buy 4 panels for a 25 m² living room and are disappointed because "nothing changes". 4 panels at 60×60 cm are 1.44 m², only 5.8% of floor area. The effect is minimal. For noticeable effects you need at least 10% (2.5 m², so 7 panels). My tip: order 8 pieces, try out 6 and return 2 if it's already sufficient. Most shops accept returns within 30 days.

**Mistake 2: Ignoring NRC value and buying only by price**

A €19 panel with NRC 0.65 isn't "half as good" as a €39 panel with NRC 0.75, it's often ineffective in practice. In a room with reverberation time 1.0 second, 8 panels at NRC 0.65 bring a reduction of around 0.25 seconds; 8 panels at NRC 0.80 bring 0.4 seconds. The difference is audible and measurable. Don't economise on NRC if you want genuine improvement.

**Mistake 3: Only thinking about walls**

The ceiling is often the most reverberant surface in the room, especially in period properties with stucco or offices with concrete ceilings. In a 30 m² office we mounted 4 panels on the rear wall and 4 on the ceiling. The ceiling panels had double the effect because sound is reflected there multiple times. If your room is very reverberant, mount at least 30% of panels on the ceiling.

My personal recommendation, what I install myself

Additional tips, what else you should know

**Can you paint or dye acoustic panels?**

Polyester fleece can be dyed with textile sprays (e.g. Simplicol textile dye). I've tested this in two projects; absorption performance remained virtually the same (NRC dropped by max. 0.03 points). You shouldn't paint foam, the open cells clog, absorption drops drastically. You can cover Basotect with acoustic fabric (see above).

**How long do acoustic panels last?**

Polyester fleece and glass fibre: 10–15 years without loss of quality. Foam: 3–5 years, after which yellowing or sagging is possible. Basotect: 20+ years. In a studio I've known since 2020, the original Basotect panels are still in use, zero wear.

**Can I hire panels as well?**

Yes, some suppliers (e.g. event acoustics companies) hire panels for temporary setups (trade fairs, conferences). For private spaces this is rarely worthwhile, from 3 months' hire the price often exceeds the purchase price.

**What about DIY solutions (rock wool, foam from DIY stores)?**

Rock wool (e.g. Rockwool) is acoustically effective (NRC 0.80–0.90), but a health concern without covering (fibres). If you use rock wool, cover it absolutely with acoustic fabric. DIY-store foam (e.g. for packaging) is usually closed-cell, acoustically ineffective. Save yourself the work and buy ready-made panels.

**Do I need an acoustician or can I measure myself?**

For living spaces and small offices a free app like "Acoustic Analyser" (iOS) or "AudioTools" (Android) is sufficient. Measure the reverberation time (RT60) before and after installation, if it drops by at least 0.3 seconds, the measure was successful. Woodchip wallpaper can tear if the adhesive tape grips too strongly — test first on an inconspicuous spot. Avoid conventional adhesive pads or spray adhesive in rented flats, as these often leave traces or damage wallpaper. In 90% of cases spacers work without problems.

Are expensive acoustic panels really better than cheap ones?

Not automatically. Price often depends on material, brand and design, not only on acoustic performance. A panel for €145 with NRC 0.88 is acoustically only minimally better than one for €79 with NRC 0.80 — the difference usually lies in durability, fire protection and workmanship. For living spaces and normal offices mid-range panels (€60–80 with NRC 0.75–0.85) are perfectly adequate. Expensive high-end panels are only worthwhile for studios, commercial premises with fire protection requirements or if you place extreme value on design.

Where should I install acoustic panels in the room — wall or ceiling?

The ceiling is often more effective than the wall because sound is reflected there multiple times. In very reverberant rooms I recommend mounting at least 30% of panels on the ceiling. On walls, reflection points are ideal: for video conferences the wall behind you, for home cinemas the side walls at ear height. Avoid concentrating all panels on just one wall — distribute them across 2–3 surfaces for even absorption. In a 25 m² room I'd mount 4 panels on the ceiling, 3 on the rear wall and 3 on a side wall.

Can I cut or adapt acoustic panels myself?

Yes, most materials can be cut. Polyester fleece and foam can be cut with a sharp craft knife or an electric saw (e.g. jigsaw with fine blade). Basotect can be cleanly separated with a hot wire. You shouldn't cut glass fibre panels yourself — the fibres are hazardous to health without protective equipment. If you need to adapt panels, better order suitable custom sizes from the manufacturer (many suppliers offer this for 10–20% premium).
