Materials list: what you really need (and what's superfluous)

For an acoustic panel measuring 120 cm × 60 cm × 5 cm you need the following components. All quantities are for one panel; multiply accordingly if you build several.

**Timber frame**

– **Timber battens**: 4 m pine or spruce batten, 5 cm × 2.4 cm cross-section (yielding frame width 2.4 cm and depth 5 cm). Tools: basic equipment for the build

You don't need professional kit. This list covers 95 % of all DIY acoustic panels:

– **Saw**: Fine-toothed hand saw OR mitre saw (hire from builder's merchant from £12 per day). Mitre cuts (45°) work well with a £5 plastic mitre box. – **Stapler**: Manual stapler for 12 mm staples (e.g. Rapid R23E, around £18) OR electric stapler (from £35, saves effort). 1000 staples cost £3. – **Measuring tools**: Tape measure, 90° square, pencil. – **Craft knife**: For cutting the rockwool (change blade every 2 cuts). – **Screwdriver or cordless drill**: If you use screws instead of brackets. – **Optional**: 120-grit sandpaper for frame edges, hot-glue gun for fabric positioning.

Step-by-step guide: from cutting to installation

**Step 1: Cut timber frame (30 minutes)**

Mark out the lengths on your timber battens for your target size. For a 120 × 60 cm panel you need:

– 2 battens at 120 cm (long sides) – 2 battens at 60 cm (short sides)

If you use mitre cuts (45° angles at the corners), measure the **outer edge** of the frame: the long side then measures 120 cm on the outer edge, with the cut angled inward at 45°. For butt joints (90° cut) the short sides are shorter by twice the batten thickness: 60 cm − 2 × 2.4 cm = 55.2 cm.

Use a mitre box for clean 45° angles. Saw slowly, without pressure; the timber guides the saw. Check every cut with the square: deviations over 2° lead to gaps in the frame.

**Step 2: Screw or glue the frame (20 minutes)**

**Variant A, corner brackets (beginners):** Lay the 4 battens out on a flat surface to form a rectangle. Place a corner bracket inside each corner, mark the screw holes in pencil, pilot-drill (2 mm bit), screw tight. Check the diagonals: both must be equal (for 120 × 60 cm they should each be 134 cm). Deviations over 5 mm should be corrected by slightly loosening a corner and adjusting.

**Variant B, screwed joint (advanced):** Drill two holes into the end face of the short battens (1 cm from edge, 4 mm diameter), countersink the holes, apply wood glue to the mitre faces, press the corners together, screw with 4 × 40 mm screws. Secure the frame for 30 minutes with clamps or a ratchet strap.

**Step 3: Cut and insert rockwool (15 minutes)**

Measure the internal dimensions of the finished frame; with accurate work these will be 115.2 × 55.2 cm (butt joint) or slightly smaller for mitres. Cut the rockwool with the craft knife 1 cm smaller than the internal measurement so it sits in without pressure: compressing too much reduces the absorption coefficient.

Lay the wool flat in the frame. For a 2-layer build (e.g. 2 × 3 cm rockwool for 6 cm total depth) stagger and glue: apply glue thinly to the contact face, let it dry for 10 minutes, press together.

**Safety**: Wear gloves and long sleeves. Rockwool itches but is not a health hazard; glass wool is less dusty.

**Step 4: Attach backboard (10 minutes, optional)**

Cut non-woven fabric or MDF board to the outer dimensions of the frame (120 × 60 cm). Staple fleece on the back every 10 cm to prevent fibres escaping through cracks. Screw or glue MDF boards if the panel is to hang flush with the wall (e.g. in studios).

**Step 5: Stretch and staple acoustic fabric (45 minutes)**

Lay the fabric face down on a clean surface. Centre the frame wool-side down on the fabric. The overhang should be 12 to 15 cm all round.

**Tensioning technique:**

1. Set the first staple midway along the long side, pull the fabric taut (but not straining), staple in place. 2. Repeat on the opposite long side, pulling here with gentle tension. 3. Set one staple midway on both short sides. 4. Work from the centre towards the corners, alternating on opposite sides, one staple every 5 to 8 cm. 5. At the corners fold the fabric like wrapping a present: pull the corner taut, make a fold, staple it down, trim excess.

**Common mistakes:** Too little tension leads to wrinkles on the visible side; too much tension warps the frame. Check the diagonals after each side.

**Step 6: Fit hanging system (10 minutes)**

For panels up to 1.5 kg (typical for 120 × 60 cm with rockwool) a sawtooth hanger screwed centrally to the back of the top batten is enough. For heavier panels screw two D-rings left and right (15 cm from each edge) and stretch a steel wire or nylon cord.

Mark the hanging position on the wall: for speech improvement at ear height (roughly 140 cm panel centre), for ceiling treatment 20 cm below the ceiling. Drill, insert wall plugs, hang the panel.

Typical beginner mistakes, and how to avoid them

**Mistake 1: Wrong fabric choice**

A client proudly showed me his self-built panel with heavy velvet (680 g/m²) two years ago; the reverberation time in his room stayed unchanged. Acoustic fabric must be **breathable**: hold the fabric in front of your mouth and blow through it. If you feel a clear airstream on the other side, it's suitable. Airflow resistance should be below 1000 Pa·s/m; most manufacturers state this for acoustic fabrics.

**Mistake 2: Rockwool compressed too much**

If you force the insulation into the frame to save material, the absorption coefficient drops: a 5 cm panel squeezed to 3.5 cm loses roughly 15 % NRC value. Cut the wool 5 mm smaller than the internal dimension instead.

**Mistake 3: Uneven frame edges**

Crooked cuts or warped battens create gaps between frame and wall. Lay the finished frame on a flat surface (e.g. kitchen worktop): all 4 corners must touch. Correct warp over 3 mm by re-sawing the affected batten or levelling with sandpaper.

**Mistake 4: Mounting at acoustically ineffective locations**

An acoustic panel directly behind the sofa brings little benefit in most living rooms; reflections from the opposite wall remain undamped. Hang absorbers at **first-reflection points**: sit in your listening position, have someone move a mirror along the wall; where you see the loudspeaker in the mirror, a panel belongs there.

Advanced variants: bass traps, corner modules, printed fabrics

Once you've mastered the basic technique, extend the benefit:

**Deep-bass absorbers (below 200 Hz)**

Increase the frame depth to 10 to 15 cm, fill with 2 layers of rockwool (5 cm each), mount the panel 10 cm from the wall. The air space behind shifts the absorption curve into the bass range; at 10 cm spacing the peak sits around 160 Hz. Costs rise to £55 to £75 per panel due to thicker frame and more wool.

**Corner absorbers (standing or hanging)**

Build triangular frames for room corners: cut the timber battens at 45° angles, glue 3 sides into a triangle with 30 to 40 cm leg length. Fill with rockwool, wrap with fabric, place the absorber in the corner. Corner absorbers work particularly well on standing waves below 100 Hz, where flat panels reach their limits.

**Photo print on acoustic fabric**

Many online print shops (e.g. WhiteWall, specialist acoustic-print services) print your image onto acoustic fabric. Cost: £40 to £80 for 120 × 60 cm depending on resolution and fabric. You build the frame yourself, fill it with wool, stretch the printed fabric; acoustically identical, optically individual. Make sure the print is not done with a latex backing (blocks sound absorption).

Installation and positioning: where acoustic panels really work

The best build quality is wasted if you position the panel wrongly. In 7 years of consulting I have seen hundreds of times that clients hang their absorbers by aesthetic criteria and are disappointed.

**First-reflection points (priority 1)**

In stereo or surround setups the side walls reflect sound back to the listening position before the direct signal arrives, which blurs imaging. Identify the reflection points with the mirror method (see mistake 4 above), hang absorbers there at ear height (120 to 160 cm panel centre).

**Rear wall behind listening position (priority 2)**

In rooms over 20 m² a clear echo often arises from the wall behind the sofa or desk. 2 to 3 m² of absorption there lowers reverberation time by 0.1 to 0.15 seconds; speech becomes clearer, music more defined.

**Ceiling surfaces (priority 3, in tall rooms)**

Rooms with over 2.8 m ceiling height benefit from ceiling absorbers: sound bouncing between ceiling and floor creates diffuse noise. Suspend panels 20 to 40 cm below the ceiling on steel cables. Installation is more involved, but the effect is noticeable.

**Where absorbers do NOT help**

Behind heavy curtains, behind furniture, in alcoves without sound incidence—there the effect stays below 5 %. Full coverage (all walls) is also counterproductive: reverberation times below 0.3 seconds sound dead and tiring.

Care, durability, replacement: long-term view

Self-built acoustic panels last 10 to 15 years in normal domestic use. Rockwool does not age; timber frames remain stable if kept dry. The fabric may fade after 5 to 7 years (especially in direct sunlight); then simply re-stretch new fabric without renewing frame or wool. Cost: £12 to £24 for fabric, 30 minutes' work.

**Cleaning:** Vacuum acoustic panels every 3 to 6 months with the upholstery nozzle (setting 1, not full suction). Dab stains on cotton fabrics with a damp cloth; textile cleaner also works on Trevira CS. Rockwool must not get wet; if water damage occurs, dry it out then replace.

**Replacing the insulation:** If the wool degrades through moisture or mechanical damage, remove the staples on the back, take out the old wool, insert new, re-staple the fleece. Time commitment 20 minutes.

Summary: when DIY makes sense, when it doesn't

You should build your own acoustic panels if:

– You need at least 2 m² of absorptive surface (saving from £100) – You already own tools or can borrow them – You enjoy hands-on projects – You need custom sizes or shapes (e.g. sloping ceilings) – Budget matters more than time

Buy ready-made products if:
